Community Games: by Grace (5th class)

The Community Games bring the whole parish together for a day of "sport and spraoi". People of all age groups participate in a variety of sporting activities. First come the heats, then the semi-finals and then the finals. It is a great honour to represent your parish in the County Community Games. At county level the competition is very tough. It is extremely difficult to reach the finals in Mosney. Many famous people including Sonia O'Sullivan and Roy Keane, have taken part in the Community Games throughout the years.

The following activities are included in the Community Games: soccer, gaelic, athletics of different distances, swimming, basketball, cycling, golf, long jump, high jump and many more. A lot of work goes into the preparation of the games. The date, times and fixtures of events all have to be sorted out. Many of the people who do the work do it on a voluntary basis. These people are very kind to give their time and energy to this work. When I am too old to take part in the games I hope to go on and work in the preparation of the games. This will give others the enjoyment I have got from the games.

My kind of music: by Lisa (5th class)

Hi, I'm Lisa and I am in fifth class. I am 11 years of age and I want to talk to you about my kind of music. Well I like all sorts of music. 'Eminem' is a big favourite in our school. My favourite is 'Hear say' and Robbie Williams. In Slane 1998 Robie did a brilliant gig. 'Hear say' are a new band out. Their first song 'Pure and Simple' went straight to number 1. My favourite singer is Shaggy, his new song 'Angel' is the nicest song on the radio. The school I go to (Brideswell N.S.) has a great choir and this year we will sing a brilliant piece for our centenary. We have excellent solo singers like Adrian, Yvonne, Alicia and Katie. I also sing solo. Our choir teacher Mrs. O'Connor is brilliant for teaching us all sorts of songs.

My holiday in America and Canada: by Eoin (5th Class)

My holiday began on the 8th of February and ended on the 22nd of February, 2001. I travelled on an Aer Lingus plane from Shannon airport to Logan airport in Boston. On arrival we changed our watches to American time which is a 5 hour difference. My aunt collected us from the airport. We stayed with her for a few days. The weather was very cold and they had a lot of snow. We travelled on a shuttle America plane from Bradley airport to Buffalo airport. There was a lot of turbulence. In Canada, I stayed with my relatives. It was extremely cold there, sometimes reaching -15 degrees. My relatives own a bar and restaurant called "The Trata Inn". There was a party for us in the pub. We went to see the Niagara Falls and the C.N. tower. We also saw ice sculptures and the public ice rink outside city hall.

I also went to watch an Ice-hockey game. We returned to America with shuttle America. I played with my cousins in the deep snow and played computer games with them. I also learned to ride a scooter.

We spent our last few days visiting various shopping malls, eating out, visiting friends and buying souvenirs for ourselves. We said our good byes and left the U.S.A at 8:15pm to arrive in Shannon at 7:00am. I enjoyed my holiday very much, but if I ever go there again I will go during the summer months when the weather is warmer and when there are more activities and enjoyable events to take part in.

My confirmation day: by Brendan (6th class)

Mam woke me at 11 o'clock in the morning. When I got up I had a shower and then I got dressed to go to the confirmation. When I got to the church I had to find a seat. When everyone from the three schools had arrived Bishop Christopher Jones called us up in alphabetical order to be confirmed. My father was my sponsor.

I knelt down in from of the bishop and he annointed me with chrism. Afterwards I walked back down to my seat. When the confirmation was over the whole class got our photo taken with Bishop Christopher Jones. Later on my family and I went for a meal in Roscommon town. When we finished the meal we went to my cousin's house. At around 11 o'clock we went to the pub and I met up with some of my friends. It was a brilliant day!

The Frightful Fairies: by Adrian (4th class)

"Hello my name is Michael Dowd and this is my story of the frightful fairies." It started on one Thursday after gymnastics. It was about 7:30pm and I got a lift home with George Cooly. As I walked across the garden I heard something like a dragonfly. As I looed around the house something whizzed past my head with the key to the house in its hands. A bug with hands?? I had to investigate! It flew into the woods at high speed. As my eyes adjusted to the dark, it looked like a little human, almost like a fairy. I began to run after it wondering why the fairy took the key. As I went deeper into the woods I began to bump into things. Then it stopped.

It began to say strange words to a tree. The ivy on the tree moved upwards and a door opened. The fairy flew right in and it closed after it. I walked over to the tree and repeated the same words. The ivy moved up and the door opened up. A bright light blinded me but I walked in. Inside the tree were riches, jewels and crowns. All the fairies stopped dancing as they looked at me. One fairy said "I am the Fairy King. What have you come here for?" I said "I have come for the house key". The Fairy King replied "You can have the house key and a golden fiddle if you beat me but if you lose you're my slave forever". The fiddle competition began. He played first then I knew I had no chance.

When he finished I got the fiddle. I got into position and suddenly whacked him on the head. As I ran to the door I grabbed the keys and I kicked the door down. Outside I found a branch, I leaned it up against the door. As I ran through the wood I could hear the fairies saying, "You cannot escape". That made me run even faster. Soon the tree was out of sight but then I heard a boom. The door fell down and hundreds of fairies flew after me.

"Nearly home", I said to myself. Two fairies got me but I hit them back. Suddenly I tripped over a root and fell. It would only be a few seconds until they caught me. Suddenly they stopped and screamed. Chester, my cat came to the rescue. The fairies flew back into the wood. I was finally out of the wood and I opened the house door. I went in. It was 10:41pm. What an escape! Two months later…I told George Cooly in school about the fairies (he didn't believe me), but as we turned our heads to the woods, I spied a fairy, waiting for someone to come towards its path.

Vampires: by Brian (Second Class)

Vampires are scary dead people who come back to life at nighttime to suck the blood out of living people. At Hallowe'en time lots of children dress up as vampires. Vampires wear a black cloak, black trousers, black shoes and a white shirt. They have very white skin and bright red lips. As vampires are dead people who come back from the dead they have no reflection. They are very scary people and good friends with witches and ghosts. All vampires have sharp white fangs.

Two together, the story of a monkey and a tiger, Tigkey

A Tigkey is found in the jungle. Like the tiger the tigkey is very fast to catch his food. The tigkey's claws are like the tigers. He uses them to creep up behind the animals, so they will not hear him and to help him pounce on them. The tigkey has the monkey's tail so he is able to swing from tree to tree and pick food from the top of trees. The tigkey is the new "King of the jungle", because he is able to see for from the top of the tallest tree. He is the fastest animal in the jungle because his tail will make him run faster. He is the only animal in the jungle to eat bananas and other animals at the dinner table.

Fairies: by Laura ( Fourth class )

Hello my name is Rachel. One night my dog and I were watching television. I love my dog so much. She is my best friend. She is two months old. Her name is Lassie. My Mum and Dad are gone to the pub. My brother Michael had gone to his friends for the night. Anyway my friend Michelle came around with her dog Spot. Then I decided to get us drinks and cookies. I was in charge of the house so I thought my Mum wouldn't mind. I got out the cookies when suddenly Michelle screamed.

I ran into the living room and I saw fairies flying all around the room. Then five of them took my dog. I screamed and pulled my dog, the dogs barked, and Michelle pulled the fairies. But the fairies flew out the window. We ran after them through the forest. Finally we reached a fairy fort. To our amazement they went through a tree. We followed. When we arrived we followed them to a castle and we went in.

We went up the stairs and we saw two little people sitting on small thrones. We knew it was the King and Queen. We looked across the room and spotted the fairies that stole my dog. They said they needed my dog to guard their kingdom. After a long chat I traded my dog. Maybe someday the fairies will come back again. Until then I will be waiting for them.

'The Farm' by Barra (Second class)

My Daddy is a farmer. He has a lot of sheep. He has 25 lambs. They are nice lambs. I like pulling the lambs in spring. Lambs are fun to play with. There are black and white lambs. Six lambs died. I was sad but daddy was mad. We had a lamb today. He was a big lamb. My Daddy has a tractor. It is a good tractor. We got it in 1998. We have a jeep too. It is good for the farm. It is a four-wheel drive. We feed the ewes with hay and bed the ewes with straw. It is hard to pull lambs. We make beds for lambs and ewes. I have a pet lamb. It is black and white.

'The Diary of Professor Fogg' By Maeve (Fourth class)

Name: James Fogg (Professor)

DOB: 12-08-1912

Height: 5 Foot 8 Inches

Occupation: Professor

Description: White haired, short and a moustache

Personality: Forgetful, creative and a bit odd

Monday 25-02-1968 7:00am-8:00am

Got out of bed. Started to get dressed. I wore my lab coat, grey trousers, brown shoes and anodd sock as I'd forgotten where I put the other one. Then I ate my breakfast. I had burnt toast and orange juice (as I have a machine that makes it that I invented)

8:00am-8:00pm I went to my lab to think of an invention. Suddenly I had a brainstorm about a brilliant invention, a robotic dog. I drew out a plan, and then I started the real work. I screwed, I fixed, I sawed until it was ready. I pressed the colourful button on his head. It then growled at me and then barked viciously. UhOh!! It was not supposed to do that, it was supposed to be a friendly, cheerful dog. Just then he tried to bite me. Afterwards he chased me around the house and bit me on my left leg. I grabbed a shoe and hit him with it. All of a sudden there was a spark and he broke down. I caught my breath. I went over to my first aid box and bandaged up my leg.

Tueday 26-02-1968 7:00am-8:00am

Pretty much the same as yesterday, except I had to wear a suit today. It was my sister's wedding and I was very excited. I can't think why I didn't get an invitation, I guess it got lost in the post.

8:30-12:00pm The wedding was at 10:30 and I left my house at 8:30, leaving me two hours to get there. The traffic was dreadful and I was half an hour late, but I still saw most of the wedding. Later everyone left the church for the meal. After the meal I dashed over to see the bride, but on my way I tripped and fell head first into the wedding cake. Nothing else went wrong besides throwing up on Aunt Sally, spilling red wine all over my sister's white wedding dress and calling Uncle John fat. All this caused my stressed, embarrassed mother to faint.

Wednesday 27-02-1968

Today somebody finally answered my advertisement in the paper to become my assistant. Her name was Maeve Shine. We started our work straight away on a robot. I asked her to write down the plan as I told it to her. She wrote it out three times incorrectly. Afterwards I asked her to pass me a screwdriver. I was amazed to find that she didn't know what it was. So I had to label all the tools. When it was ready I asked her to train him as I got us a bit to eat. In a few minutes I heard a big booming crash. I rushed in and saw my robot and my lab in pieces. I was so angry that I sacked her.

Friday 29-02-1968 (leap year)

Sorry I missed Thursday I was very busy with my inventions. I made a walking doll but it walked straight out of the house. Today I went searching for it and found it in the dump. By the time I got home it was 10:30 and time to go to bed. Even though a lot of my inventions go wrong I hope to be a professor until the day I die.

Saturday 01-03-1968

Today I… Unfortunately the diary seems to have been torn in some way, maybe it was the mice nibbling on it? It would have been interesting to know what happened to poor professor Fogg.

The Vegetable Eater: by Cathal (Third class)

Hi I'm Cathal and I hate vegetables. That is why I decided to make a robot that would eat vegetables and that I would call him "The Vegetable Eater". Now, I will tell you the story. I gathered lots of cans, boxes, tins and paper-clips and I put them together and made a robot that would eat vegetables. I recorded my own voice saying "Mammy, I've all my vegetables eaten" and used it for the robot's voice. I tested it out a few times and finally it worked.

Now, it was dinnertime so when I had all my meat eaten I told Mammy I wanted to go to the bathroom. I went in the direction of the bathroom and turned when Mammy could not see me. I went into the room where the robot was and told him to go out and eat my vegetables and he went and ate them all. I then played his voice for Mammy.

This went on for months and months and Mammy was delighted with me for eating all my vegetables. Suddenly one day the robot began to make a funny noise and he began to have rusty spots. He had eaten gravy one day and it started to make him rust. I had no time to fix him when Mammy called me for my dinner and I did not know what I was going to do. I felt sick at the thoughts of eating the vegetables. I began to eat my dinner slowly when suddenly I heard a loud noise. It was the robot, he was better. I did my usual trick and got him to eat my vegetables but soon after he exploded.

At first, I did not know why, but I found out that there was a piece of glass in the carrots which had got caught in the robot. I would have eaten those carrots to please Mammy and would have been very sick. The robot was my hero that day but I could never tell Mammy how he saved my life or she would have known that I had never eaten my vegetables. Now I will have to try and eat those vegetables all by myself until I make a new robot.

My family are originally from Ireland you see. It's coming close to Christmas and I am trying to get used to the traditions. It's very hard and I am not sure if I am getting the hang of it.

I miss my friends, but my new house is wonderful, much nicer than my old one. I brought my puppy, my fish and my horse. Daddy brought his animals too. Anyway my cousins are coming over so it's not so bad. Tonight is Christmas Eve and I am very excited. At last my mother has told me to go to bed. I am in bed but I can't sleep. I am wondering if Santa will come.

At last I go to sleep. The next morning I woke up at 7:00 Santa had come. He brought me lots of toys. I am so happy. The turkey was lovely! I got exciting presents from my cousins. I had a great Christmas.'

'Aliens' by Eoin (Second class)

No one will believe me. This is a story about my sister Maeve. That Maeve is an alien. I saw a spaceship when I kicked our ball up on the roof. I looked up on the roof and Maeve ripped off a costume. An alien walked out. She had a wierd looking gun. Quickly I hid behind a tree. The aliens were trying to take over the world. One of them saw me. Angrily I threw rocks at them. Alas, nobody would believe me.

'Never wish too hard' by Yvonne (Third class)

'I hate life,' complained Jennie, after a long hard stressful day.' It's not fair,' she said to herself. Mrs Beeknock is the only one who is nice to me. I wish I was a teacher like her. After Jennie did her homework she went to bed, but in the morning Jennie felt different.

For one thing, she was taller and secondly she had a strange message on her telephone. It was from the principal at Seashore N.S. The Principal said that the school would start at twelve o'clock. So later that day Jennie went to school. 'You are late,' said the Principal,' The children are waiting for you. See you at break.' When Jennie went into the classroom the children were sitting in their seats ready to do some work. Jennie gave them work to do to keep them busy. But it was too hard for them.

The children kept talking and Jennie was getting a sore throat from all the times she had to tell them to stop talking. It wasn't long before it was her break. Jennie was on her way to the staff room when she heard her mother calling her. She was telling her to get up or she would be late for school. Jennie woke up. It had been a dream. Jennie got ready for school and went downstairs. Everything was back to normal. Jennie was happy to be herself again.
