The Environment
by Alicia (sixth class)
Hello! I'm going to tell you about the school's environment. We try to keep the school and the yard neat and clean. We elect a litter warden every month and he/she makes sure no one throws litter. If someone does throw litter they are fined 20p.

Each year we participate in Clean-Up-Ireland week. Sixth class tidy the whole village area.We have a garden in the schoolyard. This garden has flowers planted by many of the pupils of our school. Over the years we also have planted some trees.

Our classes are decorated nicely with flowers that we planted in autumn. We enter competitions like the County Roscommon Tidy Schools Competition and other Environmental Award competitions. We have won Art competitions on the environment and got certificates of merit for the Tidy Schools Competition.

This year we are planting window boxes so hopefully we will do well in the competition! We take in newspapers to be recycled each week. They are collected on Fridays. They are taken to a company and are made into flowerpots which disintegrate if placed below ground. In class we learn about caring and having respect for our environment and we also do projects on litter, recycling etc.
